OVERVIEW
When someone embarks on the adventure of opening a business they often do so because they love what they do and they want to bring their product or service to the world.
That ambitious business owner may be very well educated in their trade, but often they are lacking the know-how of actually managing a business. After all – it’s not usually something you learn in school.
Inevitably, if they haven’t gained the knowledge of management, that previously enthusiastic business owner sinks down into an overwhelm, while their employees sink into chaotic unproductive activity, bad morale, and high turnover.
Perhaps you’ve seen this all-too-common scenario play out in companies of all types – whether it’s a dental office, a marketing firm, or a dance academy.
Sometimes the problem is that the owner or person in charge feels that they are the only one who can do the job properly. After all, they are probably the most technically skilled in the work, and likely the most passionate about their own company. Chaos will surely follow if they continue to try to do all the work and ignore or fail to train the people under them.
On the contrary, sometimes we see an executive who does not jump in when necessary, resulting in not only a disaster, but the inevitable distrust of those who were counting on him or her for guidance.
Fortunately, there is a remedy to organizational failure.
To be an effective manager and have an expanding business, you must understand the Phases of Production. You must know how to correctly utilize people; you must know how and when to jump in and help, but also understand how to get out of it again, leaving in place someone who can then reliably get the work done.
This is the key to building a company that will grow and last for generations.
